Dropshot Fishing – Recommended Setup
If you’re looking to get into dropshot fishing, keeping your setup simple is the key to success.

Recommended tackle
- 🎣 Rod: 7–8ft dropshot rod (3–15g casting weight)
- 🌀 Reel: 1000–2500 size fixed spool
- 🧵 Main line: 8–10lb braid
- Leader: 6–8lb fluorocarbon
Single hook sizes
- Size #6 – 1.5–2″ soft lures
- Size #4 – 2–3″ soft lures (best all-round choice)
- Size #2 – 3–4″ soft lures for larger perch and zander

- 1.5–2″ – Finesse fishing and clear water
- 2.5–3″ – The perfect all-round perch size
- 3.5–4″ – Bigger perch and zander
Dropshot weights
- 5g – Canals and shallow water

Fish care essentials
- 🥅 Landing net: 20–22″ rubber mesh landing net to protect the fish’s slime coat and fins.
- 🟩 Unhooking mat: Compact padded mat around 60cm x 40cm (24″ x 16″) or larger.
- 💧 Always wet your hands before handling fish and return them to the water as quickly as possible.
Top Tip
A size #4 single hook, 2.5–3″ soft lure, and a 7g dropshot weight is a brilliant all-round setup for catching perch almost anywhere in the UK.
