- Long forceps (10–12″)
- Side cutters for difficult hook removals
- Gloves (if preferred) and confidence in safe handling
- Never use a standard carp rig or light tackle for pike

- Small unhooking mat for larger specimens
- Disgorger or forceps
- Handle fish with wet hands
- Return fish quickly to minimise stress
